Every month, the CAF pays the activity bonus to several million households in France. Its calculation is based on a precise formula, but the variables involved depend on your personal situation. Understanding this mechanism allows you to anticipate the amount received and avoid unpleasant surprises during the quarterly declaration.
What the activity bonus calculation formula really includes
The activity bonus is not just a percentage applied to your salary. It combines several components that adjust to the household profile. Three main elements are part of the equation.
The first is the flat rate amount. This amount, set for a single person without children, increases according to the household composition: each additional dependent raises the flat rate.
The second element is the individual bonus. It is added to the flat rate for each household member whose earned income exceeds a certain threshold. The higher your income (up to the limit), the more this bonus increases.
The third element, often misunderstood, is the deduction of household resources. The CAF or MSA subtracts all your income (salaries, housing allowances in the form of a flat rate, other benefits) from the total obtained. The amount paid therefore corresponds to the difference between your theoretical rights and your actual resources.
A detailed supplement on each component is available on the Web Hebdo site, which breaks down the calculation mechanics step by step.

Quarterly declaration: the delay that changes everything
You just changed jobs with a higher salary, but your activity bonus hasn’t changed? That’s normal. The CAF does not take into account your income from the month preceding the declaration.
The assessed resources correspond to the months M-4 to M-2. A declaration filled out in October relates to income from June, July, and August. This time lag explains why a salary increase or decrease takes several weeks to reflect on the amount received.
Pre-filling: what to check
The quarterly declaration is now pre-filled with net social amounts transmitted by employers. But the pre-filling does not cover all types of income. Some resources must be added manually:
- Self-employment income (micro-enterprise, content creation, artistic activity), which does not always automatically report to the CAF.
- Alimony received or paid, which directly affects the calculation of household resources.
- Income earned abroad, not captured by the French automatic transmission system.
Omitting an income is not trivial. The CAF conducts regular checks, and a forgotten income can lead to an overpayment, requiring repayment in subsequent months.
Eligibility criteria for the activity bonus: beyond just salary
Eligibility is not limited to an income ceiling. Several conditions must be met simultaneously:
- Be at least 18 years old and engage in professional activity (employee, self-employed, or in an ESAT).
- Reside in France in a stable manner.
- Be of French nationality, a citizen of the European Economic Area, or hold a residence permit allowing work for at least five years.
Working students and apprentices can also benefit, provided their earned income exceeds a minimum threshold. Individuals on parental leave, sabbatical, or unpaid leave generally do not meet the activity condition.
Household composition and impact on the ceiling
The calculation takes into account all household income, not just that of the applicant. A couple where both partners work will see their combined resources, which can reduce or eliminate the right to the bonus even if each salary taken individually seems modest.
The presence of dependent children increases the flat rate amount, but it does not always compensate for a high combined income. The simulation on the caf.fr site remains the most reliable way to obtain an estimate tailored to your situation.

April 2026 reform: what has actually changed
The revaluation that came into effect on April 1, 2026, modified the flat rate amount and expanded the number of beneficiaries.
This reform does not automatically apply to individuals who are not already recipients. If you have never applied, no retroactive payment will be made. The activity bonus is never granted without submitting a file, even if you meet all the conditions.
Initial application and payment
The process is done entirely online, on the CAF or MSA website depending on your regime. The file requires some information about your family, professional situation, and recent resources. The first payment usually occurs the month following acceptance.
After the rights are opened, the quarterly declaration conditions the continuation of the payment. A forgotten declaration leads to the automatic suspension of the bonus, without notice. Regularization is possible, but payment only resumes after complete updating of the file.
The activity bonus remains one of the least requested social aids compared to the number of eligible people. Checking your rights takes a few minutes on the CAF simulator, and the difference in the household’s monthly budget can be significant, especially since the revaluation in April 2026.
